They told me I needed ₦2 million for an agent before anything could move. I didn't have it.
They told me I needed connections — somebody abroad who could pull strings for me. I had nobody.
They told me ordinary Nigerians without connections cannot apply for Canadian jobs directly. That was the biggest lie of all.
The way out of Nigeria was simpler than anyone was willing to explain.
Two years ago I was lying in my room at midnight, phone in hand, searching "how to japa without money" for the hundredth time.
My results from school were nothing special. I had no uncle in Canada. No aunty in the UK. No classmate who had made it abroad. The agents I contacted quoted me between ₦800,000 and ₦2 million — just to open a file. Before any visa. Before any interview. Before anything.
Everyone around me had advice that made things worse.
The agents wanted millions upfront before they would even look at my documents. The japa TikTok accounts were either selling expensive courses or showing off their new life in Toronto. My neighbour who left in 2019 just kept saying "save up first" — as if saving ₦2 million on a Nigerian salary was a realistic plan for a normal person.
- — There is an official government platform — completely free to use — where Canadian employers post jobs they cannot fill with local Canadians. Some of these employers are legally authorised to hire Nigerians directly from Nigeria and bring them over. No visa required to apply. No agent required. No connection required. Most Nigerians have never heard of this platform. That is exactly why agents charge millions — because they know about it and you don't.
- — You do not need a university degree for most of these opportunities. Your years of working experience in Nigeria — whether as a caregiver, a driver, a cleaner, a food handler, a warehouse operative, or a farm worker — is exactly the profile Canadian employers are actively looking for and willing to sponsor a work permit for.
- — There is a specific method of filtering these opportunities that takes less than 60 seconds to apply. Once you apply it, everything changes. You stop seeing the opportunities that are not for you and start seeing only the ones where the employer is ready and willing to bring someone in from outside Canada. Nobody teaches this in any YouTube video or japa seminar. It is buried inside the platform where only people who know what they are looking for will ever find it.
- — There are fully funded scholarships where the institution pays your tuition, your flight ticket, your accommodation, and gives you a monthly living allowance. Nigerians win these every year. Not the connected ones. Not the first class graduates. Regular Nigerians who knew where to apply and what the selection committee was actually looking for. The ones who didn't win never applied.
- — The agents charging you millions are selling you access to information that already exists on official government and institutional websites. The information was never behind a locked door. It was just never explained to you in a language you could understand with steps you could follow.
